Five regions, thirteen capitals, and three oceans.
Canada is the second-largest country in the world by land area. It is bordered by three oceans, the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Arctic, and by the United States to the south. The capital is Ottawa, in Ontario. Canada has five regions: the Atlantic provinces, Central Canada, the Prairie provinces, the West Coast and the North. The highest mountain is Mount Logan, in Yukon.
The Atlantic provinces are Newfoundland and Labrador (capital St. John's), Nova Scotia (Halifax), New Brunswick (Fredericton) and Prince Edward Island (Charlottetown). Newfoundland and Labrador has its own time zone, and PEI, the smallest province, is joined to New Brunswick by the Confederation Bridge. Central Canada, Ontario (Toronto) and Quebec (Quebec City), is home to more than half of all Canadians and is the industrial and manufacturing heartland. About one third of Canadians live in Ontario; Toronto is the largest city and the main financial centre. The Great Lakes lie between Ontario and the United States, and the St. Lawrence is Quebec's major river. Quebec is the main producer of pulp and paper and of hydro-electricity.
The Prairie provinces are Manitoba (Winnipeg), Saskatchewan (Regina) and Alberta (Edmonton), known for fertile farmland and rich energy resources. On the West Coast, British Columbia (Victoria) has the Port of Vancouver, the largest and busiest port in Canada. The North is made up of three territories, Yukon (Whitehorse), the Northwest Territories (Yellowknife) and Nunavut (Iqaluit). It covers more than one third of Canada and is called the Land of the Midnight Sun, because in summer the sun barely sets.
